Ganesh Puja is a Hindu ritual dedicated to Lord Ganesh, the remover of obstacles and the god of beginnings. It is performed to seek his blessings for success, prosperity, and the removal of obstacles before beginning any auspicious endeavor.
Ganesh Puja is commonly performed on auspicious occasions such as weddings, housewarmings, or the start of new ventures. However, it can be performed on any day and is especially significant on Ganesh Chaturthi, the birthday of Lord Ganesh, which falls in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada.
The essential items for Ganesh Puja include idols or pictures of Lord Ganesh, flowers, fruits, sweets (especially modak), incense sticks, camphor, betel leaves, coconut, and sacred water (jal). Additionally, devotees may offer durva grass, red flowers, and other favorite offerings of Lord Ganesh.
Ganesh Puja typically begins with the chanting of mantras and prayers invoking Lord Ganesh. Then, the idol or picture of Lord Ganesh is bathed with sacred water and adorned with flowers and other offerings. Devotees offer prayers, perform aarti (lighting of lamps), and conclude the Puja with the distribution of prasad (blessed food) among attendees.
